Learning for a small planet
Executive summary

Learning for a small planet is a unique project to develop new learning models for the 21st century. Many of the challenges we face today can be understood as learning challenges: economic development, the creation of a world culture that is both global and diverse, the environment, health, regional conflicts—to name a few. Increasing our learning capability is therefore an urgent imperative. But in order to do so, we need new models about how to proceed and new visions of what is possible.

Some new models are emerging. In the last decade, for instance, the concept of community of practice has inspired people and organizations across all sectors to explore new ways of supporting learning. It is time to take a systematic look at what is happening, analyze what we are learning about learning, and explore where this could lead us. Learning for a small planet is an attempt to do this:

Taking such a broad view is ambitious, but it is an urgent task because our understanding of learning will guide how we perceive what is happening and decide what to do about it. Our learning challenge today ranges from the individual to the global and cuts across traditional divisions between sectors. Only by taking a sufficiently broad view can we hope to develop the new models of learning that will allow us to face the learning challenges of our small planet.

Because of my key role in developing and spreading the communities of practice learning model, I feel I am in a unique position to lead this new effort. If you are interested in becoming an early funding partner, contact me at etienne@ewenger.com or at ++1-530-292-9222. I would be happy to discuss this project further with you.

We could also arrange for me to come and present the project in person to interested members of your organization. Independently of the outcome, my experience with these presentations is that they always engender fascinating conversations.
